I have a soft spot for the cold and long winter months. Cozy blankets, oversized sweaters, copious amounts of tea and hot chocolate, and reading by the fire. But the dry atmosphere never fails to make my skin dry and irritated. The good news is that it’s easy to update your skincare routine to prevent winter dryness.

Body Care
A regular application of oil-based moisturizers does wonders for keeping skin young and glowing. Some may be turned off by oil since it can leave you feeling greasy but don’t knock it until you try it! I’ve been applying oil to my face and body for over two years and my skin thanks me for it. Oil is the ultimate hydration ingredient because it seals water in the skin to keep it moisturized.
And what’s better than whipped body butter with sunflower oil! It’s my own recipe that I’ve been using for months now. A little goes a long way and it may seem greasy at first but the skin quickly absorbs it and you’re left with baby soft skin.
Once a week post-cleanse, I’ll use a homemade scrub to moisturize my skin. If I’m feeling especially luxurious, I’ll take a bath and use some of my sea salt lavender soak. I’ll use rub some on my hands and feet as well. Sea salt is great for skin and taking a bath really softens the skin then I’ll follow up the bath with my whipper body butter.
I keep a bit of callous balm on my bedside table. Before bed, I’ll rub some into my hands. Especially during the winter when the flu and other germs run rampant, I wash my hands frequently. And you should too!
My recommendations:
- Homemade Whipper Body Butter
- Homemade Sea Salt and Lavender Scrub
- Seed Phytonutrients Callous Balm | $16
Face Care
I usually wash my face (and body) with Castile bar soap*. But in the wintertime, soap can be too drying for my face. I’ve switched to a gentle cleanser for my face during the dry, cold months. I love Plaine Products’ face wash and moisturizer for such a mission! The face moisturizer especially does not leave me feeling greasy in the least and I use it every morning after rinsing my face.
At night you can bet I still apply oil to my face! After cleansing, I keep my skin damp and apply a teaspoon of organic sunflower oil to my face. Again oil is good! Like dissolved like, so oil dissolves oil. Putting sunflower oil (or another oil like olive oil, coconut oil, or jojoba oil) dissolves the oil on my skin and dirt in my pores, replacing with it a healthy and rich oil. I store my sunflower oil in this* glass amber dropper bottle that distributes the perfect amount of oil.
My recommendations:
- Plaine Products Face Wash* | $15
- Plaine Products Face Moisturizer* | $22
- Organic Sunflower Oil* | $15

And the last tip I’ll share to help your skin stay hydrated this winter is to make sure you hydrate too! Drinking plenty of water is what keeps skin clear and luminous. So make sure you are drinking half your body weight in ounces of water each day. What tips do you have to take care of yourself and your skin during the winter?
