One of the first DIY eco-beauty products I ever made was cream deodorant. While a fabulous and simple recipe, it’s not as convenient (and a bit messy) as having solid deodorant in a stick. And I have a confession… I kept this empty deodorant container for three years because I knew I wanted to make solid deodorant. Who does that? Who keeps an empty plastic deodorant container? Me, apparently.
But it was totally worth it because I’ve got a relatively easy recipe that just rocks! Learn how to make this yourself and how to infuse oil with natural botanicals.
If you didn’t already know, traditional antiperspirant is full of chemicals and blocks your pores. This recipe is for deodorant, not antiperspirant. So you will still sweat! Although, after detoxing and switching to natural deodorant three years ago, I sweat significantly less because my body is not overworking trying to rid itself of the pore blocking aluminum. When I know I’m going to be sweating significantly more (like during a workout or on a hot summer day), I wear a tank top or cooling, breathable natural fibers like linen. Easy, breezy, and smelling fresh.

How to Make Infused Oil
Infused oil adds scent and well as properties that the various herbs or flowers can benefit your skin. You can mix and match the herbs or flowers for your own infused oil. A lavender sage would be lovely too! My shampoo and conditioner from Plaine Products are scented with lavender so I love incorporating lavender and citrus into my eco-beauty recipes.
The ratio of this 1:2 plant matter to carrier oil.
- 1 Tbsp rosemary (dried or fresh)
- 3 Tbsp lavender (dried or fresh)
- 1/4 cup of melted coconut oil
- 1/4 cup of sunflower oil
Mix in a jar. Seal and let sit by a warm spot or on a sunny window sill for 2-6 weeks. I stored mine next to my kombucha.
How to make lavender rosemary-infused solid deodorant
Ingredients
Yields about 6-8 fl oz
- 1/2 cup of infused oil (or 1/4 cup of coconut oil and 1/4 cup liquid oil like sunflower oil, olive oil, or almond oil)
- 1/4 cup of beeswax pellets or grated beeswax
- 2 Tbsp shea butter* or mango butter* (hard oil)
- 2 Tbsp cornstarch
- 2-8 Tbsp of baking soda (depending on preference. I usually put around 4 Tbsp, or 1/4 a cup)
- 20 drops of essential oil (optional)
If you are sensitive to baking soda, replace with arrowroot powder. Arrowroot powder is just as effective but not as easy to obtain. I always have baking soda lying around the house!
Directions
- Strain the infused oil with a fine mesh strainer. I strain the infused oil again with a tea basket strainer. Measure out ingredients.
- Mix and melt infused oil and beeswax. Either in a double boiler or a water bath. I put about 2 inches of water in a pot and simmer. Then I put a metal bowl in the water bath.
- Once melted remove from heat and stir in shea butter. Stirring constantly until the shea butter has melted.
- Add the powders, stirring constantly until combined and the mixture has started to thicken.
- Pour into an empty deodorant container and/or a mold. Let set for a couple of hours before using.
This recipe makes enough to last me an entire year! No joke. I pour the extra into a silicon soap mold and then when I run out of solid deodorant in my tube, I melt it down again and pour it into the tube. It makes the perfect amount for the size of my container, just under 3 oz– the normal size.
Why I Love this DIY
- Completely natural and easy to obtain ingredients
- Non-toxic and chemical-free
- Inexpensive and takes less than fifteen minutes to make
- Zero waste and effective!
- Ability to control the fragrance and ingredients
- It lasts a long time and is shelf-stable
I think one of the most convenient things about this deodorant is that it travels well. Hopefully, I can see just how well it travels sometime soon. Until then, I’ll be soaking up summer (smelling like lavender and rosemary) and planning another staycation! Have you made your own deodorant before? Let me know how this works for you if you try it!
Happy Making-
