Winter is the time to slow down and take care of yourself. Especially your skin! Cold, dry air can make your skin itchy and parched. I’ve come up with three budget-friendly moisturizing scrubs that you can try this winter. With ingredients from your cabinet, you’ll be hard-pressed to find an easier or more luxurious solution to your worst winter weather skincare.

Gentle Sugar and Olive Oil Scrub
This recipe is the most gentle of the recipes and is great for your body or your face. The fine crystals of sugar exfoliate the skin while the olive oil moisturizes.
Ingredients
Yields 8 oz or 1 cup. I store my sugar scrub in an 8 oz elite mason jar*.
- 2/3 cup of white sugar
- 1/4 cup of olive oil (or 4 tbsp)
- (optional) a couple of drops of essential oil for fragrance
Directions
- Simply mix and store!
- To use, rub over clean, slightly damp skin for the best effect. Be careful to avoid the sensitive skin around your eyes. And if using in the shower, be careful because the oil can make the floor slippery.
- My favorite way to use this scrub is before and after shaving. It gets rid of all dead skin cells and enhances the smoothness of shaving.

Uplifting Coffee Scrub
This recipe seriously wakes up the skin! I love its uplifting properties and the glorious smell of coffee and coconut oil. Especially if you use caffeinated coffee grounds, it helps boost circulation and rejuvenate the skin. Like all the recipes, it exfoliates to get rid of dead skin cells.
Oh, and the other thing about this recipe? It gives new life to used coffee grounds that would otherwise get tossed in the compost. It’s a win for your health, the environment, and makes you feel like a smart (coffee smelling) cookie.
Ingredients
Yields a little more than 8 oz or 1 cup. I store my coffee scrub in an elite pint 16 oz mason jar*.
- 1/2 cup of used coffee grounds
- 1/2 cup of melted coconut oil
The great thing about this recipe is the ratio is 1:1 so you can adjust accordingly to how much coffee grounds you have.
Directions
- Melt the coconut oil.
- PRO TIP: If you have an electric stove, just place your glass jar with the coconut oil right on the stovetop on a low setting.
- Stir in the used coffee grounds and coconut oil together. You can even mix it in the container for easier clean-up. Otherwise, transfer to an air-tight container after mixing.
NOTE: If you do not dry out your coffee grounds then you must store this recipe in the refrigerator because it contains water. The shelf life for coffee scrub with used coffee grounds is about two weeks.
Another option is to make this recipe with unused ground coffee. This is a great option if you want to make this as a gift. The shelf life of making a recipe in this way is a lot longer because it does not contain water.
Using
Gently run the scrub all over your body and leave for a minute or two. Then rinse thoroughly. Be careful to avoid the eyes! This recipe can be used on your face if you used finely ground coffee, otherwise, it might be too coarse for sensitive skin. If using in the shower, be careful because the coconut oil can make the floor slippery.
My favorite use for this recipe is as a body scrub!

Sea Salt and Lavender Soak/Scrub
Sea salt has amazing properties for healing and replenishing skin. Lavender’s soothing scent makes you relax. And together, these two ingredients make the perfect sea-side garden scrub of your dreams!
Ingredients
Makes a little of 1 cup. I store my sea salt soak/scrub in a glass jar with a hinged lid*.
- 1 cup of fine sea salt
- 3-4 tablespoons of dried lavender
Directions
- Mix together and store in an air-tight container.
Use
Please do not use this recipe on your face! And to be honest, it’s not my favorite scrub recipe either. It is a lot coarser than the other recipes so it’s great for feet and hands.
The best way to use this is as a bath soak! Take about self-care, a sea salt bath is wonderful for the skin and the lavender adds a relaxing and pleasant aroma.
And that’s it! Just a couple of DIY scrubs that you can quickly whip together this winter. All the ingredients are easy and inexpensive to purchase. Most come from the kitchen cabinet after all! Self-care does not have to be full of masks and scrubs with lots of chemicals and plastic packaging. You can make it yourself with results that are just as beautiful. Maybe even more so since you also have peace of mind knowing exactly what you are putting on your skin ;).
